Believe and Receive

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of a natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

John 1 vs 12

A decision must be made before receiving or not receiving someone – just as a decision is made before believing or not believing something. And that decision is simple – to receive / believe or not to receive / believe.

Your decision to believe Jesus died for you, and to receive Him as your Lord and Savior is your irrevocable guarantee of forever being a child of God – not how many hours /days you fast and pray; not how much you give; not whether or not you speak in tongues; and certainly, not your ‘righteous’ works. All these things are good – spending time in prayer, studying the bible, giving to those in need etc.   but they do not in any way determine your position as a child of God. Only one thing determines your position – whether or not you choose to Believe and Receive.

Make no mistake – there’s a world of difference between knowing without a shadow of doubt that one is a child of God, and believing one’s position and right must be earned and retained via ‘works’.

By simply believing and receiving you enjoy the following;

1. Freedom
– Freedom to confidently approach Him at all times
– Freedom to converse / relate with Him
– Freedom from fear of thinking He’s somehow displeased with you

2. Love
– Surety of His everlasting love for you
– Ever increasing love and gratitude towards Him
– An overwhelming desire to love others like He loves you

3. Joy
– Joy of knowing He loves you Unconditionally
– Joy of knowing you belong to His family
– Joy of knowing the creator of all things has got your back

4. Peace
– from recognizing you’re not being scored / measured on daily performance

So much depends on how you see yourself. Do you see yourself as having to earn your position as God’s child? Or do you see yourself as a treasured child of God? The more you see yourself as His treasured child the happier and more empowered you are to walk in line with His will.

On getting back home from work many years ago, I found the nanny begging my daughter, three years old at the time, to eat her food. She was having none of it, completely ignoring her nanny’s desperate pleas. Recognizing the futility of trying to persuade a child whose mind was already made-up, I instructed the nanny to leave her in peace.

When the cook brought my dinner to the dining table a few minutes later I proceeded to take my seat in order to viciously strike back at the hunger that had seized me on my way home. As soon as I sat down, my daughter climbed down from her high-chair, walked confidently over to me and perched herself on my lap. She then looked at me as if to say, “Go on then! This food isn’t going to enter my mouth by itself. Feed me dad, I’m blooming starving!!” She proceeded to eat most my dinner.

She knew her rightful position as a much beloved child, and as such felt free to take what was hers – in this case the majority share of daddy’s food.

Recognizing your position as a child of God is the surest way to a Loving, Free, Peaceful, Joyful and Fun relationship with your father in heaven.
