There Must Be Substance

I spent several hours wondering how best to convey today’s message to you. For it’s a message you’ll probably hate me for in the short term, but thank me for later in life. Indeed before commencing this article I had to ask myself the following question;

‘What matters most to me – my readers liking me? Or their Success?’

Your Success is far more important than whether or not you like me. In truth whether you like me or not is irrelevant. The only thing that matters to me is your ‘Successfully Actualising Your Passion’.  And this is what true success is – not money, not huge mansions and luxurius cars.

Success is Actualising Your Passion – Actualising Your Purpose.

During a conversation with a very intelligent young man by the name of Jordan on Sunday morning, he (Jordan) identified an element of today’s generation that has been of major concern to me for quite some time.

He said;

“The problem with our generation is that there’s no Substance. And social media has made it so much worse. We just like looking at pictures and hearing motivational quotes and messages; but we rarely stop to think of what these things actually mean –  the substance, if any at all, behind them; and their relevance to our own lives.”

To say I was pleasantly surprised by this young man’s comment is a gross understatement. Indeed his statement gives me all manner of hope.

Don’t get carried away with pictures and uplifting quotes. Think more about the substance behind them, and their relevance pertaining to Who You Are and Where You’re Going.

In the same way, regarding your Passion, don’t just get excited because you really like doing something.

Do the following;

1. Dig deeper – in order to Discover Who You Are and Where You’re Going. The depth of knowledge you build in this particular area will determine the depth of your determination and perseverance.
2. Build Knowledge and Expertise in your Passion.
3. Start small, and build over time. Stop trying to achieve over-night success. It rarely happens.

The reason you think certain individuals achieved instant success is because you only noticed them when they became successful. The reality is they had been building that success for well over ten/fifteen years.
The most fulfilling and long-lasting achievements are those that take several years to Build and Develop.

Gary Keller, the founder of one of the largest real estate franchises in the world, Keller Williams, says in his book, The One Thing;

“When you see someone who has a lot of Knowledge, they earned it over time. When you see someone who has a lot of skills, they developed them over time. When you see someone who has done a lot, they accomplished it over time. When you see someone who has a lot of money, they earned it over time.”

No matter what your Passion is – Knowledge, Skill, and Expertise are absolutely key. Without them you won’t get very far. Not only are they the substance behind every great quote, but they’re inevitably the Substance behind every success story.

If you’re feeling a little excited right now as a result of this message, I want you to calm down, read this article again, then close your eyes and ask yourself these three questions;

1. Who am I? And where am I going?
2. What is this message actually saying to me?
3. What knowledge do I need to build to become an expert in my Passion?
